African Elephant Information

General Description: about 10 feet tall at the shoulder, weighing up to 14,000 pounds; males are larger than females

Habitat: savannas and dry woodlands

Behavior: African elephants live in small family groups consisting in related females and their young. Males live alone or in bachelor herds.

Diet: roots, grasses, leaves, fruit, and bark

Reproduction: gestation lasts 22 months, usually one calf is born
